Febio Fest: Day 1 with real life

febio

On 20.3, Sunday I have had the pleasure going to Czech film festival known as Febio Fest, personally my favourite. This year, this festival certainly has a lot to offer. Unfortunately I can not visit more than two days of this festival, so I had to pick carefully.

Well, not that carefully Sunday was clearly the day for me, as when your favourite actor is attending that said festival, it is quite clear. For me, and for years, I have admired acting of German/Spanish actor Daniel Brühl who first charmed me in small film Ladies in Lavender (also starring Maggie Smith and Judy Dench) ever since I have followed Mr. Brühl career with passion and was not disappointed, I recommend you to check his movies, they are worth your time.

But apart from Daniel Brühl I have also had the please to see two more movies and I would love to share my thoughts.

ALL THREE OF US (‘NOUS TROIS OU RIEN’)
Director : Kheiron
Stars: Kheiron, Leïla Bekhti, Gérard Darmond
Country: France

TRAILER

All Three of Us is a beautifully crafted true story of one family that went through unthinkable and yet remained in good spirit, humour and hope. This film and stand-up comedian directorial debut (Kheiron) is a beautiful little film showing more compassion, beauty and hope than plenty spiritual movies together. The whole film feels light-hearted but does not take history of one difficult era in Iran lightly, quite the opposite. In this film, through humour and kindness you learn more than just history, you learn compassion which is these days often missing, whilst people are being geographically judged (it is indeed as ridiculous as it sounds). This film came at the right time and in the right way. This film is one of the most beautiful autobiographical films you can find.

THIN YELLOW LINE
Director: Celso R. García
Stars: Damián Alcázar, Joaquín Cosio, Silverio  Palacios, Gustavo Sánchez Parra
Producer: Guillermo del Toro
Country: Mexico

TRAILER

What you notice on film Thin Yellow Line immediately is it’s authenticity and honest with which this story follows group of strange and different men, bind together by hard work and need for money. As this group of workers paints thin yellow line on over 200 km of Mexican road they not only learn more about each other, but also themselves. This film is a true depiction of struggle and hard deeds of working men in it’s exact roughness. And as such this film deserves applause because there are not many films showing how hard can life be.

TRAILER

“Our director decided, that some of the things that were happening inside Colonia Dignidad were simply too much for viewers, and I agree. I have met a men who was born inside (Colonia) and some of the things he told me were unbarable to listen to”.

                                                                                                                                  – Daniel Brühl

Those were some of the few words of an actor Daniel Brühl before the screening of his new movie “Colonia” begun.  And he was right. As someone who looked into these stories even before announcement of this film, also starring Emma Watson and Michael Nyqvist, this place was without any doubt a fine replica of hell on Earth.

This film shows you some of the regimes that were happening inside through the story of a young couple caught right in-between. And when you leave the cinema, you leave with very uneasy feeling. Not only because of the horrors that went inside, but most importantly for the amount of time these were happening. The main man,Paul Schäfer Schneider, who have founded this sect of devoted lost souls turned fanatic, through the psychological and physical “games”. Shockingly enough Colonia Dignidad existed between 1961 to 2002, and under different leadership and apparently changed it exists until these days.

Even more shocking is fact, that nobody was truly punished, even thought the torture, experiments, child molestations and imprisonment against ones will was later proven.  Schäfer himself was imprisoned in 2006 and died four years later in prison. None other (member of government or German embassy were punished).

This film in overall perhaps was not so deep in manner of scripts, but the actions and acting (especially Mr. Nyqvist who was scarily good) speak for themselves and in that manner, this was a important story showing many types of victims who have fallen into the cages of Colonia Dignidad. And I strongly recommend seeing this movie for all parties did an excellent job.
